The internal combustion engine is basically an air pump. The efficient entry and exit of gases into the engine is the most important factor in developing maximum power. Accordingly if high engine performance is desired, attention to the cylinder head is crucial.

In fact, only careful modifications to the cylinder head will allow an engine to rev properly and make power to redline. Not only volume, but velocity of the intake charge will increase performance. Because of this, careful shaping of the ports will not only increase the volume of air traveling through the ports, but maintain increased air-charge velocities at lower RPMs, contributing to a strong torque curve throughout the power band.
